New in 2007...

The month of January is coming to a close (it’s amazing how quickly time goes sometimes). In this update I want to share our church’s dreams for the year as well as some of my own personal vision.

Zolder50 2007 dreams (shared by the Pastors at the December Soul Gathering):

  1. Create an Urban Center (in our new ministry location at Herengracht 88)
  2. See 50 people come to faith in Jesus Christ
  3. Multiplication of Zolder50 into a new Neighborhood church
  4. Equip the church in leadership development, sharing our faith and becoming stronger in apologetics
  5. Expand our world views through taking short term mission trips, possibly to other places in Europe and Kenya (to the villages where we’ve assisted with the Solis Foundation and Village Enterprise Fund in 2006)

Please pray with me for God’s will to be done through our church in 2007!!

"To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul. I trust in you, my God!… Show me the path where I should walk, O Lord; point out the right road for me to follow. Lead me by your truth and teach me, for you are the God who saves me. All day long I put my hope in you." - Psalm 25:1-2, 4-5

Incidentally, you may have been following Eric’s blog (www.ericasp.com) and have seen the 4-month “naming conundrum” we’ve dealt with for our church. In the process, Martijn suggested,

“You guys should keep the name as it is!!! I mean the word zolder50 ( for me ) is a name on its own, it gets even better and more original when you’re not actually at an attic at number 50. I mean we're still 'reaching' high, its also about our 'roots' and besides that in my opinion its a very strong concept to call yourself zolder50 when you're at a cellar, you gotta love the funny twist, people will remember that :”)

Well, at this month's Soul Gathering, we finally decided how to stick with the name Zolder50 for our church (embracing the unique irony of an "Attic" meeting in a cellar, and saving our first real christening for when we actually multiply as a church).  And we're going to separately name the venue in which we meet -- The H88 (making a deliberate missiological statement that the church and the building are not interchangeable, and allowing this ministry center to be the incubating station for not just one church but for what we hope will be multiple church plants through the years).

Also, please pray for our staff team… for unity, vision and for God to lead each one on a path of glorifying the Father through our lives and calling!

New opportunities and vision for me in 2007

FINALLY, I have succeeded in moving toward getting enrolled in Dutch classes—first, had to wait for the sofi-nummer (the Netherlands version of the Social Security number) which came in September, then 4 more months after registering to be called for an intake (which happened on January 29) and then today I took the exam to determine my level (which no doubt is “beginning”). If all goes well I will begin 3 days a week of learning Dutch in the first week of February!!! Wish me well (I know it’s going to be a challenge)!

Outreach & Influence opportunities:

  1. Dutch class
  2. Having spiritual discussion/taking surveys at the University of Amsterdam
  3. Winter training (yes, outside on Monday nights) with Ultimate Frisbee, where I continue to get to know the players from my team in the Fall city league plus many others.
  4. Life Group with Romy (a Chinese woman who is finishing her PhD)
  5. New neighbors (Danette- an American who has lived here over 20 years, and in the apartment below mine- Deirdre and Dorin)

Please pray for the Lord to use my life to spiritually influence others to come to know Him as their Lord and Savior.

Thank you for your prayers, your support and for joining me in growing God’s Kingdom here in Amsterdam. You are a blessing!!

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all,
